UK backs Dong for 'suction bucket'

UK government-industry body the Carbon Trust has awarded £6m ($9.9m) to Dong Energy to speed up co-funded development of a “suction bucket” foundation concept for deep-water wind turbines.

The Danish utility plans to install a prototype of the new-look tripod, which is based on a design by SPT Offshore, at its Borkum Riffgrund 1 wind farm off Germany later this year, with a view to moving the jacket into serial production by 2017 for UK Round 3 projects.

The foundation demonstrator will be built by Bladt Industries in Aalborg, Denmark.
