Moventas has taken over the wind gearbox operation of David Brown Gear Systems, creating a new company called DB Wind UK.
The deal includes David Brown’s
UK-based production unit and test facilities, and creates what Finland-based
Moventas claims is an operation in prime shape to serve the needs of
manufacturers designing multi-megawatt offshore wind turbines.
Moventas and David Brown are both
owned by UK
private equity group Clyde Blowers Capital (CBC).
Moventas said DB Wind UK
will continue David Brown’s drivetrain development work for Samsung’s 7MW offshore
The new company will produced the 7MW
gearboxes with engineering and component supply from both UK and Finland, it added.
This will add to Moventas’s existing
technology interests, which include Areva's offshore offerings.
“The acquisition makes Moventas the
world-leading multi-megawatt and offshore wind gearbox manufacturer,” the
company claimed, adding that the deal made sense ahead of the expected steep growth
of the UK
The Finnish company said the deal
would also speed its entry into the UK and Irish wind service market,
where David Brown has a strong position.
