The last turbine has been installed at Belgium’s 325MW Thornton Bank offshore wind farm, with full commissioning due within weeks, said project shareholder RWE.

The German utility said the last of 18 6.15MW REpower turbines needed to complete the third and final phase went in yesterday.

Thornton Bank, 30km off the Belgian coast, is being developed by the C-Power consortium at a total project cost of €1.3bn ($1.7bn).

RWE is the biggest shareholder in the project. Other partners include EDF Energies Nouvelles and Belgian offshore specialist DEME.

The first 30MW “pilot” phase, comprising six REpower 5MW turbines, has been operational since 2009. Both the second and third phases use the 6.15MW REpower turbines.
