Five private companies say they would be interested in developing commercial wind energy in federal waters in the Atlantic Ocean off North Carolina's coast.

They are Virginia Electric Power, a unit of large utility Dominion; EDF Renewable Development; Fishermen’s Energy; Green Sail Energy, and Outer Banks Ocean Energy, part of Apex Wind Energy.

The Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) identified three offshore areas for potential development: two are south of Wilmington and the other beyond the Outer Banks east of the towns of Kitty Hawk and Manteo. It called for expressions of interest last December.
