Dong to submit Walney extension plans

Denmark’s Dong Energy is looking to submit plans in May for the Walney offshore wind farm extension, which would add up to 750MW off the UK’s Cumbrian coast.

Company officials have given a presentation to Cumbria County Council’s committee for Barrow-in-Furness on the benefits to the local economy of the project.

The proposed 750MW extension would add up to 120 additional turbines and provide power for up to 559,000 homes. If accepted by the UK’s Planning Inspectorate, the 144 sq km extension could be in operation by March 2018.

The Walney wind farm, comprising Walney 1 and 2, is located some 15km off the coast of northwest England in the Irish Sea.
