Hywind moves ahead with Japan floater plan

Plans for a floating wind farm demonstrator project off Japan based around Statoil’s Hywind spar-buoy turbine are moving ahead, with the Norwegian group and developer Hitachi Zosen launching a feasibility study for a site-specific model of the pioneering design.

The two companies entered into a cooperation deal last November to flesh out a version of the slimline floating turbine concept – a 2.3MW prototype of which has been producing off Norway since 2009 – that would be purpose-built for Japan's deep waters.

"Our intention with the cooperation is to see how our extensive data collection program from the Hywind demo, and our technology on turbine positioning and monitoring the operations, can be utilised on floating structures in the future," a Statoil spokesman tells Recharge.
