Alstom Ocean’s 1MW tidal turbine has started flowing power to the UK grid for the first time at the European Marine Energy Centre’s (Emec) test site off Orkney, Scotland.

The turbine, which was recently acquired through the company’s takeover of Tidal Generation from Rolls-Royce, is the scaled-up version of a 500MW model previously put through its paces at Emec.

Being trialled under the Energy Technologies Institute’s (ETI) ReDAPT (Reliable Data Acquisition Platform for Tidal) project, the larger machine will continue its testing programme over an 18-month period to hone technology before it is deployed in pilot arrays in the run-up to full commercial production.
