WGK to launch offshore turbine cable study

A transition piece at the UK's Sheringham Shoal wind farm

UK offshore oil and gas contractor Wood Group Kenny (WGK) has been tapped by government-industry body the Carbon Trust to study the risks and rewards of connecting wind turbines to inter-array lines using so-called “free-hanging” cables.

The 15-month project would test the case for doing away with the steel j-tubes currently used to protect cables between the seafloor and the transition piece that joins the turbine’s foundation to its tower.

WGK tells Recharge the study would flesh out of the feasibility of using static cables in dynamic marine environments, and any design changes needed to use “unarmoured” cables offshore, with an eye on the cost-savings potential of a new cable concept.

The project team will also run the rule over any associated technological, engineering and supply chain issues linked to non-j-tube designs.

The work builds on earlier…
