UK funds trio of offshore wind innovators

WindFloat Pacific is in the running to be the first multi-turbine floating wind development off the US

Principle Power's WindFloat will be one of the innovations to benefit

The UK government has handed out £2.3m ($3.5m) to drive forward three technologies seen as key to lowering the cost of offshore wind power.

Cablemaker JDR Cable Systems, industrial electrical specialist High Voltage Partial Discharge (HVPD), and floating wind turbine developer Principle Power will share the pot.

The funds were awarded as the first tranche in the latest round of the Offshore Wind Component Technologies Development and Demonstration (OWCTDD) scheme, run by the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and Technology Strategy Board.

Cambridgeshire-based JDR has been given over £1m to develop and build innovative high voltage alternating-current cables, while Manchester-based HVPD was granted £545,500 to develop an integrated offshore high-voltage network management system (OHVMS) for wind farms.
