Construction has commenced on time at the third and final phase of C-Power’s Thornton Bank offshore wind farm in the Belgian North Sea, with commissioning on track for the summer.

Thornton Bank – whose shareholders include RWE, EDF Energies Nouvelles and Belgian offshore specialist DEME – is already the largest offshore project in Belgian waters, after the commissioning of its second phase late last year lifted its total capacity to 184.5MW.

The first 30MW “pilot” phase, comprising six REpower 5MW turbines, has been operational since 2009. Both the second and third phases employ REpower turbines rated at 6.15MW each, with the entire project set to weigh in at more than 325MW upon its completion this summer.
