UK set fair for 18GW, says Crown Estate

America can  learn from the UK offshore experience

Some 47GW of potential capacity has been allocated by UK authorities

More than three years after Round 3 zones were awarded – and in spite of its many well-known challenges – the UK offshore wind industry remains on track realistically to deliver 18GW by 2020, according to a new Crown Estate report.

However, the Crown Estate acknowledges that the future still very much hangs in the balance, with the UK in a position to have as much as 45GW in place by 2030 – or as little as 12GW.

Some 47GW of potential capacity has been allocated by the Crown Estate and Scottish government to date.

The report, among the most in-depth ever published on the sector’s obstacles, cites political uncertainty and the availability of finance during the construction phase as the two biggest concerns for the industry at present.
