Belfast offshore wind hub ready to go

Developers Dong Energy and ScottishPower Renewables have taken over the new offshore wind terminal at Belfast Harbour that will be the base for construction of their West of Duddon Sands project in the Irish Sea.

Belfast Harbour formally handed over the £50m ($77.7m)  facility – the first purpose-built offshore wind hub in the UK and Ireland – in a ceremony attended by Northern Ireland’s First and Deputy-First ministers.

The terminal has already started handling components for the 389MW West of Duddon Sands, and the first Siemens 3.6MW turbines are expected to leave for the project site this summer.

The 200,000 sq metre Belfast facility includes a 480-metre deep-water quayside.  Up to three vessels will be able to berth simultaneously.
