Offshore wind 'set for 55GW by 2020'

Huge amounts of new UK offshore wind will join England's Kentish Flats

The worldwide offshore wind market is set to rocket over the remainder of the decade, boosted by declining oil and gas reserves and rising investment in waters off Britain, according to new figures from UK-based research group GlobalData.

The company’s new report forecasts offshore wind power to grow from a total installed capacity of 5.1GW last year to 54.9GW by 2020 – a better than ten-fold increase, and representing a compound annual growth rate of 34.5%.

The UK’s prime mover status is expected to be reinforced during this period, building on the 2.7GW of new turbines erected in its offshore region last year – more than half of the new global installed capacity.
