A test centre for offshore wind turbines up to 10MW is on track to open in Denmark in 2014.

The nacelle test facility is being built by Lindoe Offshore Renewable Centre (LORC) with cooperation from industry heavyweights Vestas, Siemens and Dong.

The twin-berth facility will be able to carry out different tests on a nacelle simultaneously and simulate the performance of a turbine as part of an array.

“Over a period of six months we can carry out stress tests on the nacelle equal to 25 years of operation,” claims a LORC spokesperson.

LORC will next week open an advanced welding centre that aims to develop laser-welding techniques for thick steel structures such as wind foundations and towers.
