First Westermost monopile in place

The first foundation was installed today at the 210MW Westermost Rough offshore wind farm in the UK North Sea, said developer Dong Energy.

The first of 35 monopiles was put in place by installation vessel GeoSea Innovation.

The foundations will support the wind farm’s 6MW Siemens offshore wind turbines when they go in later this year – the first major commercial deployment of the new machine.

Construction is being managed out of the east of England port of Grimsby.

Duncan Clark, Westermost Rough's programme director said: “This is a significant point on the project, and the first foundation installed really kicks off a critical time for construction.

“Work now moves into a very busy and complicated phase over the coming months as we continue to install foundations, get ready to receive and install the offshore substation, begin to lay the cables that connect the turbines to the national grid, and then later in the summer, begin the installation of the turbines themselves.”
