Atkins gets Race Bank substation nod
UK contractor Atkins has won the contract to design an offshore substation for Dong’s 580MW Race Bank wind farm off the east coast of England.
The deal brings the number of substation jobs awarded by the Danish utility to the consultancy to five, with Atkins also engineering units for the Walney and Burbo Bank Extension projects.
“Atkins is working with us to provide a design for five substations that can be applied to three of our projects,” said Dong Energy UK country manager Benj Sykes.
“This will enable a production-line approach to fabrication, rather than a bespoke solution each time, and will reduce costs without compromising safety and reliability.
“Dong has a tough target to cut the cost of offshore wind by 35-40% by 2020. We are doing this through standardising the building of a wind farm.”
