Axys joins Virginia offshore study

US engineering group Timmons has tapped wind resource assessment outfit Axys Technologies to join a team looking at metocean and offshore environmental monitoring off Virginia.

The tie-up follows the award of funding by the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy for a research project aiming to cut costs for commercial offshore wind power developments on the outer continental shelf waters off the east coast state.

“We look forward to realising some practical solutions that will help to reduce the overall cost of harnessing wind power offshore,” says Axys chief executive Terry Tarle.

Timmons’ Rich Thomas adds: “Axys’ unique combination of considerable experience combined with innovative systems integration techniques will assist us to produce a reliable, state-of-the-art monitoring solution.”

In February, Axys deployed a laser-based Lidar unit at the entrance to Virginia’s Chesapeake for a government-backed project led by WeatherFlow to develop an offshore wind model in the area.
