Fatigue test joy for SeaAngel blade
German super-size blade designer Euros has wrapped up fatigue tests on it 81.6-metre model, set to be flown by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ (MHI) 7MW SeaAngel prototype at SSE’s pseudo-offshore test site in western Scotland.
The blade, a 32.5-tonne design built around ultra-stiff carbon-fibre reinforced-plastic spar caps for high load-bearing and durability, underwent edgewise and flapwise loading trials equal to 25 years’ offshore on the test rig at Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES).
“Due to the close co-operation between Fraunhofer IWES and Euros' engineering team, the test ran according to the scheduled time frame,” says Euros.
“The reliable blade design and its well-balanced material selection performed as previously calculated. The final post fatigue is now under preparation and will be conducted soon.”
“This is the first blade of this size that successfully finished such a fatigue test.”
The timeline for installation of the flagship SeaAngel at the Hunterston test site has slipped, with expectations now that the components will be delivered to site “toward the end of the summer”, according to SSE.
No date been set for first power generation from the MHI machine.
Euros, meanwhile, is working on a design for an ultra-long "90-metre-plus" model with an eye on the emerging market for 10MW+ offshore wind turbines.
A new fabrication hall is planned in Sassnitz, northern Germany, for construction and testing of the new, longer model once a first order is inked.
