FLiDAR unit deployed for Dong
Europe’s first commercial deployment of floating LiDAR (FLiDAR) wind measurement technology is underway in the Irish Sea for Dong Energy.
A FLiDAR-equipped buoy will carry out a one-year measurement campaign for the Danish offshore wind giant
The FLiDAR unit – developed by renewable energy consultancy and software services provider 3E and Geosea subsidiary Offshore & Wind Assistance – is made up of a moored, harsh-environment marine buoy fitted with a Leosphere WindCube v2 lidar (light detection and ranging) system that will collect and stream wind-speed data back to the developer.
Hugh Yendole of Dong said: “The FLiDAR unit represents another example of how we are looking at technology across the development and construction process to help lower the cost of offshore wind.
“We are looking forward to seeing the results from the tests in the Irish Sea that will help to inform our potential future projects in the area.”
