E.ON starts Amrumbank West work

Utility E.ON has started preparatory work at the site of Germany’s Amrumbank West offshore wind farm.

E.ON is currently installing scour-protection for the foundations that will support the 288MW wind farm’s 80 3.6MW Siemens turbines.

The company is using containers of geotextile sand in the scour-protection process – used to prevent currents from displacing sand around the bases of foundations.

E.ON claims it is a pioneer of this approach, which draws on techniques used in river and coastal protection, and offers significant logistical and cost advantages.

Amrumbank West, in the German North Sea northwest of Helgoland, is due for completion in mid-2015.
