Wind for Prosperity honoured in NY

Vestas has picked up a major international business award for Wind for Prosperity – the Danish company’s initiative to bring renewable power to remote communities in developing nations.

Vestas group senior vice president and chief marketing officer, Morten Albæk, was in New York yesterday to collect the award for Wind for Prosperity after it was named 'Best Purposeful Concept' by the Association of National Advertisers (ANA) and specialist marketing publication The Internationalist.

The jury – making the award for the first time – said Wind for Prosperity represents a unique combination of business, marketing and corporate social responsibility (CSR), and can deliver real returns on investments as well as long-term, sustainable economic development.

One juror said the concepts behind the initiative "go beyond charitable giving, CSR programmes, 'green' initiatives or even cause-related ventures...When done right, business growth is a result, as is making a world of difference. This new way of working truly represents a global revolution in marketing objectives and possibilities".

Albæk said: “As the CMO and group SVP of Vestas Wind Systems, I am deeply honoured to receive this first ever Best Purposeful Concept award for Wind for Prosperity.

“Energy poverty is not only a political issue; it is a moral and spiritual challenge to all of humanity. It is clear that renewable energy has a huge role to play in serving the 1.3 billion people worldwide currently lacking electricity," said Albæk, who was recently appointed to Vestas' eight-person executive committee.

“I am very proud that we have developed a business concept which – with help from our strategic partners – will deliver cleaner and cheaper energy to places where it is most needed. I couldn’t’ think of anything more meaningful to spend my time on.”

Albæk, a Recharge Thought Leader, launched Wind for Prosperity last November as “one of the biggest corporate initiatives to combat energy poverty and deploy green technology in developing countries”.

The scheme uses advanced hybrid-systems of refurbished Vestas turbines and diesel to deliver stable, reliable power to remote communities.

Kenya and Jordan have already been earmarked for deployments under the scheme.
