Spain’s Iberdrola has started work on a UK subsea cable link it says will help to flow wind power from Scotland southwards.

The 2GW link, from Ayrshire to North Wales, is a joint venture between Iberdrola subsidiary ScottishPower and National Grid.

The cable will carry electricity to England and Wales from Scotland’s major wind farms such as the 539MW Whitelee onshore plant.

It is due to be fully up and running by 2016.

Iberdrola chairman Ignacio Galan said: "The Western Link project will act as a benchmark for similar developments around the world, as the deployment of this technology at such a large scale has never been undertaken before.”
