Wave Hub seeks PelaStar licence

The UK Energy Technologies Institute's (ETI) floating wind turbine prototype project has taken another step forward.

The operator of Wave Hub -- the offshore facility in southwest England that is in the frame to test the unit -- has handed in applications for an electricity consent and marine licence for the turbine.

Approval would clear the way for the floater to be installed and switched on as early as 2015.

The tension-leg platform (TLP), dubbed PelaStar, was designed by US engineer Glosten and is fitted with a 6MW Alstom Haliade 150 turbine. It is installed in around 50 metres of water in the Celtic Sea.
