Germany debates €10bn network upgrade

Germany’s Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, today will debate a government proposal to speed up the construction of 36 new high-voltage power lines, to help integrate a soaring amount of renewable output into the country’s grid.

To carry out the necessary infrastructure works will cost around €10bn ($13bn), according to a draft proposal seen by Recharge.

Additional costs for HVDC technology or laying cables underground are not yet included in that sum, the draft says.

“The rapid expansion of renewable energies, the gradual shut-down of remaining nuclear power plants and the construction of conventional (fossil) power plants at new locations require the transmission of electricity over large distances,” the draft proposal says.
