Maiden tests at a new extreme-climate offshore wind turbine research and development (R&D) centre in Belgium have been wrapped up.

The Offshore Wind Infrastructure Application Lab (OWI-Lab), built in the port of Antwerp with government investment by technology R&D body Sirris, put a transformer developed by CG Power through its paces in conditions down to -40C.

CG’s 33kV 5.5MVA Bio-Slim unit, a turbine transformer for in-nacelle installation, was trialled over four days with a test sequence that included a full-load cold start at -30C.
