ANALYSIS: Alstom is a force to be reckoned with

Wind turbines are just one part of Alstom's arsenal

Job cuts always ignite a firestorm of emotion and coverage, and Alstom’s revelation on 26 February that it will slash nearly 400 wind-related jobs in Spain was no different.

But a separate announcement it released the same day – involving a major order for its grids division from TenneT – is of far more significance to the broader industry.

Alstom has long been the leading supplier to the hydroelectric sector, accounting for a quarter of total installed capacity around the world. In 2007 it acquired Spanish wind-turbine maker Ecotècnia, in a hugely symbolic step for the wind business.
