Greens join German RE policy fray

Germany’s opposition Green Party has come up with a plan of its own to amend support for renewable energy, adding to a fast-growing political debate around the issue.

The Greens would lower feed-in tariffs (FITs) for some new wind installations and greatly limit the exemptions available to industries from the surcharge on power bills that is levied to support Germany's renewables build-out.

The initiative comes after a more radical proposal by environment minister Peter Altmaier to freeze the surcharge at its current level of €0.0528 ($0.071) per kWh by introducing a series of measures that could harm the renewables industry.

Altmaier’s plans include a moratorium on FITs for new renewable plants, or temporary cuts in payments for existing projects.
