Approval in for Ecotricity's Heck Fen

UK developer Ecotricity has won approval for its 66MW Heckington Fen wind farm directly from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, in what would be one of the country’s largest onshore projects.

"Heck Fen" is seen as being particularly contentious, given its proximity to the constituency of Member of Parliament John Hayes, the UK’s anti-wind energy minister since a reshuffle last autumn.

The Lincolnshire project, in east England, was submitted to government in late 2009, and is approved for up to 22 turbines.

Under legislation aimed at quickening the pace of the UK’s renewables build-out, all onshore wind farms larger than 50MW are approved by central government as opposed to local councils.
