EWEA: 'EU wind at 105.6GW but clouds loom'

The UK's London Array helped boost EU capacity last year

New wind installations across Europe accelerated in 2012, but political uncertainty could make this year and next far more challenging, industry body EWEA warns.

The wind sector installed 11.6GW of new capacity in 2012 in the EU, bringing the total to 105.6GW, according to latest annual EWEA figures. That was up from 9.4GW installed in 2011.

10.4GW of the new wind was onshore and just under 1.2GW was added offshore.

“The 2012 figures reflect orders made before the wave of political uncertainty that has swept across Europe since 2011, which is having a hugely negative impact on the wind energy sector,” EWEA CEO Christian Kjaer said.
