Nigg, a one-time oil and gas goliath on the east Highland coast

Alex Salmond made one of his more curious announcements at the Offshore Wind and Supply Chain conference in Aberdeen the other day.

The First Minister unveiled plans to enhance the offshore renewables manufacturing potential of the northern ports of Nigg, Ardersier, Invergordon and Kishorn through a memorandum of understanding with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

HIE, the Highland equivalent of the old English regional development agencies, was committing to help with their £100m ($156m) upgrading.

Roughly double the estimate from a couple of years ago, on offer will be regional selective assistance grants, fast-track planning and so forth.
