'Perspective vital' says Portuguese minister

An over-focus on local issues could hurt vital projects such as transmission lines

The EU must rapidly engage in a “serious debate” about the escalating tensions between environmentalists who are most focused on a local conservation agenda and those more concerned with climate change, says Portuguese Energy Secretary Artur Trindade.

The risk, he says, is that without "greater perspective" being introduced to the conversation, renewables will become conflated in the public mindset with the less environmentally-wholesome segments of the energy industry.

“There needs to be a rebalancing of our environmental values,” says Trindade, who took the top job within Portugal’s energy ministry last year.

“If you overweight local environmental problems, then you create a situation where it’s impossible to do things in the field – whether build wind farms or new transmission lines.”
