Swedish wind generates 19% more

Wind generated 7.2TWh of electricity in 2012, an increase of 19% on the figure achieved a year earlier, says the Swedish Wind Energy Association (SWEA).

“Electricity production from wind power contributed to lower prices on electricity and reduced climate emissions from coal-fired power plants from our neighbours,” says Annika Helker Lundström, chief executive at SWEA.

Wind production in Sweden has nearly tripled since 2009, and increased more than seven-fold since 2006.

SWEA believes wind could produce 11TWh by 2014, but says with the current level of ambition in the Electricity Certificate System – the government’s market-based support system for expansion of renewable energy – that figure won’t be achieved until 2020.
