The 2GW link, from Ayrshire toNorth Wales, is a joint venture between Iberdrola subsidiary ScottishPower andNational Grid.
The cable will carryelectricity to England and Wales from Scotland’s major wind farms such as the539MW Whitelee onshore plant.
It is due to be fully up andrunning by 2016.
Iberdrola chairman IgnacioGalan said: "The Western Link project will act as a benchmark for similardevelopments around the world, as the deployment of this technology at such alarge scale has never been undertaken before.”
