AES plans 100MW NI wind storage

US- based AES plans to build 100MW of battery capacity to store wind power in Northern Ireland.

The huge array would be used to “support the best use of wind power and improve grid efficiency in Northern Ireland”, said AES.

The company has applied to the System Operator of Northern Ireland (SONI) for a connection for the batteries.

“We have submitted a connection application to SONI to secure transmission grid connection at Kilroot and are continuing to explore potential commercial arrangements,” says Mark Miller, vice president, AES United Kingdom and Ireland Markets.

The proposed storage array will be integrated into existing AES infrastructure at the Kilroot power station, and “with a suitable commercial agreement in place, the storage array could be online as early as the second quarter of 2015”, adds Miller.
