Walney extension enters new phase

The UK Planning Inspectorate has closed its examination period for Dong Energy’s proposed 750MW Walney Extension.

Dong says the Irish Sea project is moving into the decision phase, when inspectors must prepare a report on the application information, then make a final recommendation to the British government.

The government is expected to make a decision on whether to grant development consent in November, after which there is a six-week period in which the decision can be challenged.

Dong says if it is granted development consent, it will look to make a final investment decision next year.

The Walney extension project was one of five offshore wind farms among the first wave of renewables projects to get Contracts for Difference under the new national support mechanism.
