Developer Moray Offshore Renewables, a joint venture between Portugal’s EDP Renovavais and Spain’s Repsol Nuevas Energías, claims the £4.5bn ($6.83bn) project, 22km off the northeast tip of Scotland, could create hundreds of local jobs and power about one million homes.

Highland planning officials had recommended that the local authority’s North Planning Applications Committee raise no objections to the plans.

Some conditions were attached to the councillors’ decision.
