Standing in 40-metres of water some 100km off the Netherlands, the substation will collect andstep-up power generated by the development’s 80 Areva M5000 turbines forfeed-in to Germany’s national grid.

The substationhouses transformers and high voltage (HV) switchgear wired together as part ofa so-called Mobile Offshore Application Barge (MOAB), a specialised oilindustry inspired design that is floated out to site and jacked-up on four legsabove the water.
