EirGrid has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with French counterpart RTE for further preliminary studies to help decide if a 600km line is technically possible.
The power line, with a potential capacity of around 700MW, would be used to export renewable power to France and to import electricity if required.
Two possible routes have already been identified – one from Knochraha, near Roche’s Point in County Cork to La Martyre on the west coast of Brittany, and a second from Great Ireland in County Wexford, also to La Martyre.
