The measure passed by members in Strasbourgon Wednesday came after intense lobbying by the European Commission and somenational governments, including the UK,France, Denmark, Finland,Italyand The Netherlands.

The move, which temporarily removes some 900 million permits from theETS,  has been welcomed by the proponentsof the scheme, but is strongly opposed by energy-intensive industries andcoal-burning utilities.

The revamped proposals gained strong backing from liberal and socialistgroups in the parliament, and also won over a number of wavering centre-rightMEP’s.
