The island of Ireland will likely need 4.8GW-5.3GW of installed wind capacity to achieve a 40% clean electricity threshold in 2020, which policymakers believe will be necessary to meet the Republic of Ireland's broader and legally binding EU renewables target.

Ireland presently has about 2.25GW of installed wind capacity.

Closing the gap would require 350MW of new wind capacity each year to 2020, compared to the 230MW averaged over the past six years, according to transmission system operator EirGrid in its annual report on renewables on the island.
