Suzlon starts work in South Africa

Indian turbine manufacturer Suzlon has started construction of a 138MW wind farm in South Africa, its first project in the country.

The Cookhouse project in Eastern Cape Province was the largest awarded under South Africa’s first round of renewable energy tenders.

Suzlon signed a framework agreement with the developer, African Clean Energy Developments (ACED), in May 2011 to supply 66 of its 2.1MW turbines to the wind farm.

It says today that financing closed in late December and it began construction last month.

"The financial closure of the Cookhouse project marks the commencement of our aspirations for South Africa,” says Tulsi Tanti, Suzlon founder and chairman.
