HHI deploys 5.5MW turbine off Korea
South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has installed the country's largest offshore wind turbine at the Kimnyeong development off Jeju Island.
The 5.5MW prototype has a 140-metre-diameter rotor and hub height of 100 metres.
The turbine is in line for a 2.5GW project spanning Jeollanam and Jeollabuk provinces.
"We also plan to accelerate marketing campaign overseas including Asia and Europe on the basis of ample experiences and knowhow we have accumulated from a variety of offshore plant projects,” says HHI's Koo Young-jun.
The turbine is designed to withstand winds of 62.5m/s and is expected to generate the power to supply 1,100 households a year.
