The project is part of a broader research initiative, spanning turbine components and smart maintenance technologies, to be conducted under NEDO through early 2015. Total funding could reach ¥1.4bn ($13.7m). 

Hitachi declined to comment on the matter. NEDO said it has selected the company to participate as part of a public offering held in September.
