Samsung out of offshore wind

The 7MW offshore giant in place at Methil

Samsung is pulling back from offshore wind while it carries out a strategic review of its activities in the sector, Recharge has learned.

Industry sources said Samsung Heavy Industries – which already has a 7MW prototype turbine up and running in Scotland – has put its ambitions in the sector on ice, with no timeframe set for the review process.

That will leave Samsung out of the running for major offshore wind contracts for the foreseeable future.

Despite its rapid progress in deploying its prototype in shallow waters in Methil, Fife, Samsung faces formidable rivals for the orders needed to make an impact in a European offshore wind sector that is set to be smaller than seemed likely a few years ago.

Those rivals include Siemens, Areva and MHI Vestas Offshore.

The latter was reportedly in the running with Samsung for a supply deal at the EDPR-led 1.1GW Moray Firth offshore wind development in Scotland.

A Samsung spokeswoman in Korea described as a “rumour” suggestions that the group would exit the sector.

But media relations representatives for Samsung in the UK declined to immediately comment, and said a statement will be issued shortly.
