Blackstone on German offshore hunt

Work underway at Meerwind

US private equity firm Blackstone is still searching for a good third German offshore project, Jens Assheuer, managing director of WindMW, the company building the 288MW Meerwind farm, said at the Windforce 2014 conference.

WindMW is 80% owned by Blackstone, while developer Windland Energieerzeugung holds the rest.

Blackstone also already owns the Nördlicher Grund offshore project, which it plans to equip with 64 6MW turbines.

"We are looking around in the market," Assheuer said, answering a question by Recharge.

"Everyone, who has a project with a grid connection before 2019 is welcome to talk to me if he is willing to sell."

Assheuer also said that as soon as the reform of Germany's Renewable Energies Act (EEG) has passed and is enacted by 1 August, there will be fresh final investment decisions coming forward for German offshore wind projects.

"FIDs are to be expected in the sector. They will come," he said, adding that he was talking about the industry, not necessarily his own company.

"Whether it will be a great wave (of FIDs) or a small wave, remains to be seen. … But we will certainly see one or two FIDs every year."

The Meerwind offshore wind park is expected to get grid connected in coming months and start feeding into the network in the third quarter of this year, Assheuer said.
