UK OK to 1.2GW East Anglia 1

The UK government has given the go-ahead to ScottishPower Renewables/Vattenfall’s 1.2GW East Anglia One offshore wind farm, located some 43km off the Suffolk coast in Eastern England.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) says the wind farm is expected to bring over £520m ($882m) of investment into the UK economy and support almost 2,900 jobs.

Construction is expected to start in 2017 with offshore installation commencing in 2018. Generation is expected to begin the following year.

The decision follows an examination process by the UK Planning Inspectorate,  resulting an recommendation being made to the energy secretary in March.

East Anglia One currently plans to install up to 240 turbines, making the wind farm significantly larger than the UK's London Array, currently the biggest offshore project in the world.

RenewableUK’s chief executive Maria McCaffery said: This excellent news provides a huge confidence boost for the UK’s entire offshore wind sector. Our world-beating offshore wind industry is set to more than treble in size by the end of the decade – projects like this will help us to maintain our global lead."

UK energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey added: “East Anglia and the rest of the UK have a lot to gain from this development. The project has the potential to inject millions of pounds into the local and national economies, and support thousands of green jobs.”
