Moventas debuts lubrication upgrade

Climbing the tower to install Moventas’ FusionDrive inside a turbine in Oregon

Refitting should be complete by August

Drive-train designer Moventas is rolling out a new life-extending gearbox lubrication technology on a batch of turbines at Innopower's Ajos wind farm in Kemi, Finland.

The upgrade, which will be bolted into ten WinWind WWD3 machines as part of a larger service project at the 30MW development, is expected to prolong operation of the main transmission system components "until the end of the turbine lifetime".

The new system is built around extra pumps for the main bearings, adding temperature sensors, changing the coolers and an updated lubrication management logic.

"We have high expectations for this upgrade," says Innopower production manager Raine Laaksonen. "Key main components should last until the end of turbine lifetime.

"Professional maintenance and condition management enables minimising potential risks. High-quality components, reliable solutions and professional partners are the secret to wind power’s success."

Refitting work at Ajos, which is foreseen to take up to five days per turbine, should be complete  by August, according to Moventas’ Nordic service sales manager Teemu Hyytiäinen.

Moventas's gearbox upgrade offering ranges across bearing solution modernisations, ring wheel material and heat treatment changes, and housing enforcements.
