Renova gears up Alto Sertão I

Brazil's Renova Energia will be ready to start commercial operations of the 294MW Alto Sertão I wind power complex by the end of June, following the conclusion of local transmission links in the state of Bahia.

Federal power company Chesf will switch on the Igaporã II substation and lines by the end of May, says Renova, quoting power regulator Aneel.

Renova will then need another 30 days to start commercial operations.

Alto Sertão is made up of 14 wind power plants, in which Renova invested R$1.2bn ($536m). It sold power from these plants at the 2009 auction and had been scheduled to start operations in July 2012, but transmission issued have pushed that date back by nearly two years.

As Recharge recently reported, aside from Alto Sertão I, Renova has another six wind farms with 159MW of capacity that will also benefit from the Igaporã II connection.

Additionally, Spain's Iberdrola will be able to start operations of the Caetité 2 and 3 of 30MW each, while Italy's Enel Green Power will be able to switch on the Emiliana and Joana wind plants – rated at 28.2MW each – also in the same region.
