Georgia Power PPA approved

State regulators have unanimously approved utility Georgia Power’s proposal to buy 250MW of power under a 20-year contract from two Oklahoma wind farms owned by developer EDP Renewables North America.

The contract takes effect 1 January 2016, according to the Georgia Public Service Commision.

The 151MW Blue Canyon II and 99MW Blue Canyon VI wind farms will provide power at below the utility’s avoided cost, or what it would cost to procure the energy from other sources including any that Georgia Power could develop.

“By adding yet another form of renewable energy – already constructed – to our energy mix, we keep Georgia prepared for possible rising natural gas prices in the future and we avoid any construction cost overruns associated with building our own resource,” says PSC Commissioner Tim Echols.

As reported by Recharge, Oklahoma under Governor Mary Fallin, a Republican, supports the export of wind energy from the state to the US southeast as utilities there look to ease dependence on coal in response to tougher federal emissions standards.

Georgia Power, the largest electric utility subsidiary of Southern Company based in Atlanta, has also embarked on an aggressive program to add solar power.

Georgia along with nine other southern states does not have installed wind generation capacity due to relatively weak resource, although it has begun to look at possible offshore development.
