Nordex is upping its blade production capabilities

German wind turbine group Nordex says it will invest about €50m ($68.4m) over the 2014-16 period to boost its rotor blade production capabilities.

The investment will focus on expansion and upgraded tooling for its own blade plant in Rostock, including the building of a new hall for blade finishing.

Nordex said Rostock “will concentrate on producing the most modern and largest rotor blades. Over the next few years these will be the NR58.5 and NR65.5 blades for the N131/3000, N117/3000 and N117/2400 turbines.”

Nordex will also pump money into a ‘built-to-print’ strategy in conjunction with international suppliers – pointing out that 80% of its turbines go into service outside Germany.

The company said it “remains committed to covering only 20%-30% of its requirements internally".
